What Gun Milan doesn't tell you

The 36-point Ashtakoot system — explained in full here — is built almost entirely around the Moon sign and nakshatra: temperament, emotional compatibility, health and general harmony between two people's minds. It is thorough and classical, but it was never designed to answer a narrower, very human question: is there actual chemistry here? For that, Vedic astrology has a different, less commonly discussed check — Venus and Mars, compared between the two charts.

Why Venus and Mars specifically

Venus governs what a person finds beautiful, how they express affection, and what draws them romantically. Mars governs drive, desire, assertion and pursuit — how a person goes after what they want. Together, they form a natural pair for reading attraction: one person's Venus (what they're drawn to) set against the other's Mars (how that person pursues and asserts) — and the reverse — gives a picture of mutual chemistry that Moon-based Gun Milan, built for a different purpose, doesn't directly address.

How the comparison actually works

• ?Check the sign relationship between Person A's Venus and Person B's Mars — are they in the same sign, in signs that are naturally friendly (trine or sextile-equivalent), or in signs considered to clash?
• ?Then check the reverse: Person B's Venus against Person A's Mars — attraction in Vedic synastry is read as a two-way exchange, not a single direction.
• ?A harmonious relationship in both directions is read as strong, natural chemistry; harmony in one direction only suggests attraction that feels more one-sided; tension in both suggests chemistry that may run hot but also friction-prone.

Dignity matters here too — not just the sign relationship

A harmonious sign relationship between one person's Venus and the other's Mars describes the shape of the chemistry, but not necessarily its full strength — that also depends on how well-dignified each planet is on its own. A debilitated Venus (in Virgo) has less to offer even sitting in an otherwise favourable sign relationship to a partner's Mars, the same way a debilitated Mars (in Cancer) pursues with less conviction than an exalted one (in Capricorn). Two well-dignified planets in a harmonious relationship — say, an exalted Venus in Pisces meeting a partner's own-sign Mars in Scorpio — describes a stronger, more full-bodied version of the same chemistry pattern than two weakly-placed planets technically forming the identical sign relationship. A concrete case: if Person A's Venus sits in Taurus (Venus's own sign) and Person B's Mars sits in Aries (Mars's own sign), the two planets are in a naturally friendly sign relationship and both independently well-dignified — close to the strongest version of this chemistry check the system describes. If instead Person A's Venus sat in Virgo (debilitated) in that same friendly sign relationship to Person B's Mars, the geometric harmony would still be present, but with meaningfully less to draw on. This is the same layered-checking principle that runs through every yoga and dosha on this site: the base geometric rule is the starting condition, and each planet's own strength decides how much of that potential actually shows.

Reading both together, honestly

The most useful reading holds both checks side by side rather than picking one. Strong Ashtakoot compatibility with weak Venus-Mars chemistry can describe a partnership that is stable and easy day-to-day but lower in romantic spark. Strong Venus-Mars chemistry with weaker Ashtakoot compatibility can describe intense early attraction that may need more conscious work to sustain over decades. Neither pattern is a verdict on its own — they're two different lenses on the same two people, and a serious compatibility reading uses both. This is also why a compatibility reading that only quotes a Gun Milan number, without ever naming the Venus-Mars layer or checking either planet's dignity, is giving a partial answer to a question the chart is capable of answering more fully.
