Ruby, and the graha it serves
Ruby, manik, is the stone of Sūrya — the Sun, which in Jyotiṣa signifies the soul, vitality, the father and one's standing in the world. Its traditional associations are confidence, authority, recognition and the capacity to be visible without shrinking from it.
The Sun is not a gentle graha. It illuminates and it burns, and a ruby is generally described as amplifying both. Where the Sun is well placed and the chart can carry it, the stone is associated with leadership and clarity of purpose. Where the Sun is already strong or badly placed, the same amplification can read as heat: impatience, difficulty accepting authority, and friction with the people one has to work under.
The Sun's relationship with your ascendant matters as much as its condition. For Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Libra ascendants the Sun rules houses that make a ruby a more considered decision, and for several of those a strong Sun is not straightforwardly helpful.
In the market, glass-filled ruby is extremely common and is sold at prices that look like a bargain because the stone is largely filler. Untreated Burmese material is the traditional preference and is priced accordingly.
How it is traditionally worn
Traditionally set in gold or copper and worn on the ring finger of the right hand, first on a Sunday at sunrise — the Sun's day and hour.
Who should be careful
A ruby amplifies the Sun, which is not always what a chart needs. If the Sun is already dominant, or afflicting the chart rather than supporting it, adding heat can sharpen exactly the tendencies you were hoping to soften — impatience, ego friction, trouble working under others. Glass-filled and lead-treated rubies also dominate the retail market; a suspiciously affordable ruby is usually mostly glass.
Your chart decides — not your sign
A gemstone strengthens a planet. Whether strengthening Sun helps you depends on which houses it rules from your ascendant, how dignified it is in the sign it actually occupies, what aspects it, and which planetary period you are currently running. The same graha is a functional benefic for some ascendants and a functional malefic for others — so a stone chosen from a sun sign, a birth month or a shop counter is chosen without the information that decides it.
