Emerald, and the graha it serves
Emerald, panna, belongs to Budha — Mercury, the graha of intelligence, speech, calculation and exchange. Its traditional associations are mental quickness, clarity in communication, skill in trade and negotiation, and steadiness in study.
Mercury is unusual among the grahas in being adaptable — it takes on the character of whatever it associates with, benefic in good company and less so in poor. That makes an emerald's effect more contingent on the rest of the chart than, say, a pearl's: strengthening a Mercury that is closely conjunct a malefic is not the same act as strengthening a clean one.
It is a favourite for students preparing for examinations and for people in commerce, communication and analysis. Where Mercury rules or occupies the relevant houses for the ascendant and is reasonably placed, that reputation is earned rather than folklore.
Almost all emeralds on the market are oiled or resin-filled to improve clarity; this is normal and generally accepted in the trade, but heavily filled stones are sold at natural-stone prices far too often. Panna is also commonly substituted with green onyx or glass.
How it is traditionally worn
Traditionally set in gold and worn on the little finger of the right hand, first on a Wednesday morning — Mercury's day.
Who should be careful
Mercury takes the colour of its company, so an emerald's effect depends heavily on what Mercury sits with and rules in your chart — it is more chart-contingent than most of the nine. Emeralds are also among the most treated stones in the trade; oiling is normal, but heavily resin-filled material is routinely sold as untreated. Be sceptical of an emerald that is both large, clean and cheap.

Whether strengthening Mercury helps you depends on which houses it rules from your ascendant, how dignified it is in the sign it actually occupies, what aspects it, and which planetary period you are currently running. The same graha is a functional benefic for some ascendants and a functional malefic for others — so a stone chosen from a sun sign, a birth month or a shop counter is chosen without the information that decides it.
