Blue Sapphire, and the graha it serves
Blue sapphire, neelam, belongs to Śani — Saturn, the graha of time, structure and consequence. In the classical literature it is described as the quickest-acting of the nine stones, and that reputation is the reason it is both sought after and feared. A stone that works quickly can also go wrong quickly.
This is the one page on this site where the responsible answer is a refusal more often than a recommendation. Saturn is a functional malefic for most ascendants, and a strong Saturn is not something most charts benefit from having amplified. The traditional practice of testing a neelam — wearing it briefly, unset or lightly bound, and observing — exists precisely because the tradition itself did not consider this a stone to prescribe casually.
Where Saturn is a functional benefic — Taurus and Libra ascendants are the usual examples, where Saturn rules a kendra and a trikoṇa — a well-chosen neelam is regarded as one of the most powerful supports available, associated with discipline, endurance and slow, durable gain.
It is also the stone most often misrepresented in the market. Heated, diffused and synthetic corundum are all sold as neelam, and iolite (kaka neeli) is a common cheaper substitute. If the price seems impossible, it is.
How it is traditionally worn
Traditionally set in silver or panchdhatu and worn on the middle finger of the right hand, first on a Saturday — Saturn's day. The tradition itself prescribes a trial period before committing to it, which is unusual among the nine and tells you something.
Who should be careful
Most people should not wear neelam. Saturn is a functional malefic for the majority of ascendants, and this is the fastest-acting stone of the nine — an unsuitable neelam is the single most common cause of the "my gemstone made things worse" story. Never wear one on a shop's advice, a sun sign, or because a relative had a good experience with theirs. If anyone recommends neelam without your birth date, time and place, walk away.
