Hessonite (Gomed)

Rahu's stone — prescribed for confusion, obstruction and kaal sarp fear. Rarely a first resort.

We do not sell gemstones. Astro Ratan reads your chart and tells you whether a stone is indicated — including, often, that it is not. There is nothing here to buy and no shop to be sent to.

Hessonite, and the graha it serves

Hessonite, gomed, is the stone of Rāhu — the north lunar node, the shadow of hunger, amplification and everything foreign or unconventional. It is traditionally prescribed where Rahu's confusion is dominant: obstacles that make no sense, decisions that keep slipping, or a period where nothing lands as intended.

Rahu is a shadow graha with no physical body and no ownership of signs, which makes gomed structurally different from the seven planetary stones. It is generally regarded as period-specific — worn during a Rahu daśā or antardaśā, or where Rahu is central to the difficulty — rather than as a lifelong stone.

It is heavily associated with kaal sarp dosha, and that association is where most of the selling happens. Kaal sarp is a configuration whose severity is disputed even among classical authorities, and a stone bought in fear of it is a stone bought badly. The reasonable question is not "do I have kaal sarp" but "what is Rahu actually doing in my chart, and is this the period where it matters?"

Gomed is a garnet, inexpensive relative to the corundum stones, and widely available — which at least means the financial harm of a wrong recommendation is smaller here than with neelam or heera.

How it is traditionally worn

Traditionally set in silver or panchdhatu and worn on the middle finger of the right hand, first on a Saturday — Rahu shares Saturn's day in common practice. Usually recommended for a defined period rather than indefinitely.

Who should be careful

Gomed is prescribed for a situation more than for a person, and it is rarely a first resort. Be particularly careful of it being sold as a kaal sarp remedy — that configuration's severity is disputed among classical authorities, and fear is the usual sales tool. Rahu is a shadow graha; strengthening it is not like strengthening a planet, and an unnecessary gomed can amplify exactly the restlessness you were trying to settle.

Your chart decides — not your sign

A gemstone strengthens a planet. Whether strengthening Rahu helps you depends on which houses it rules from your ascendant, how dignified it is in the sign it actually occupies, what aspects it, and which planetary period you are currently running. The same graha is a functional benefic for some ascendants and a functional malefic for others — so a stone chosen from a sun sign, a birth month or a shop counter is chosen without the information that decides it.

What people ask

  • "I've been told I have kaal sarp dosha — do I need gomed?"
  • "Am I in a Rahu period right now?"
  • "Is gomed something to wear permanently or only for a while?"
  • "Why does everything feel obstructed at the moment?"
  • "Is hessonite safe if Rahu is not troubling me?"

Ask before you buy anything

Share your birth date, exact time and place once. Astro Ratan computes your chart to the degree and tells you whether hessonite is actually indicated for you — and will say plainly if it is not. In English or Hindi, on WhatsApp.

Common questions

Who should wear Hessonite (Gomed)?

Hessonite is the stone of Rahu (Rāhu), the shadow of hunger — amplification, foreignness, obsession and unusual routes. Whether it suits you depends on your whole birth chart — which houses Rahu rules from your ascendant, how dignified it is, and the planetary period you are running — not on your sun or moon sign. Rahu's stone — prescribed for confusion, obstruction and kaal sarp fear. Rarely a first resort.

Who should NOT wear Hessonite?

Gomed is prescribed for a situation more than for a person, and it is rarely a first resort. Be particularly careful of it being sold as a kaal sarp remedy — that configuration's severity is disputed among classical authorities, and fear is the usual sales tool. Rahu is a shadow graha; strengthening it is not like strengthening a planet, and an unnecessary gomed can amplify exactly the restlessness you were trying to settle.

How is Hessonite traditionally worn?

Traditionally set in silver or panchdhatu and worn on the middle finger of the right hand, first on a Saturday — Rahu shares Saturn's day in common practice. Usually recommended for a defined period rather than indefinitely. These are traditional conventions rather than rules that override a reading: the metal, weight and finger appropriate to you follow from your chart, and an astrologer who prescribes them without your birth details is guessing.

Can I choose a gemstone from my zodiac sign?

No — and this is the single most common mistake. A gemstone strengthens a planet, and whether strengthening a given planet helps you depends on which houses it rules from your ascendant, its dignity, and the period you are running. The same planet is a benefic for some ascendants and a malefic for others. A stone chosen from a sun sign or a birth month is chosen without the information that actually decides it.
