Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj)
Jupiter's stone — the most commonly recommended in India, and the one most often recommended without looking at a chart.
We do not sell gemstones. Astro Ratan reads your chart and tells you whether a stone is indicated — including, often, that it is not. There is nothing here to buy and no shop to be sent to.
Yellow Sapphire, and the graha it serves
Yellow sapphire, pukhraj, is the stone of Guru — Jupiter, the graha of wisdom, expansion, teachers and dharma. It is far and away the most prescribed gemstone in India, partly because Jupiter is a natural benefic and partly because it is the safest thing an astrologer can suggest to someone they have not read properly.
That popularity is worth being honest about. Jupiter being a benefic in general does not mean Jupiter is benefic for you. For a Taurus or Libra ascendant Jupiter rules difficult houses and is a functional malefic — strengthening it with a stone is not automatically a kindness. The classical logic is not "Jupiter is good, wear pukhraj"; it is "which houses does Jupiter rule from your lagna, how dignified is it, and does strengthening it help what you are actually trying to do?"
Where it does suit the chart, the traditional associations are with clarity of judgement, teaching and learning, matters of dharma, and — in a woman's chart in the classical reading — marriage. It is usually described as a steadying, expanding influence rather than a dramatic one.
Quality matters more than size in the tradition: a clean, untreated, well-coloured stone of modest weight is preferred to a large included one. Anyone urging you toward carat count over clarity is selling, not advising.
How it is traditionally worn
Traditionally set in gold and worn on the index finger of the right hand, first on a Thursday morning — Jupiter's day. Weights are prescribed by the astrologer, not by a rule of thumb.
Who should be careful
Because Jupiter is a functional malefic for some ascendants — Taurus and Libra most discussed — pukhraj is not universally beneficial, despite being universally recommended. If someone suggested it without asking your birth time, they were guessing. It is also frequently substituted with cheaper citrine (sunela) and sold as pukhraj; they are different stones.
Your chart decides — not your sign
A gemstone strengthens a planet. Whether strengthening Jupiter helps you depends on which houses it rules from your ascendant, how dignified it is in the sign it actually occupies, what aspects it, and which planetary period you are currently running. The same graha is a functional benefic for some ascendants and a functional malefic for others — so a stone chosen from a sun sign, a birth month or a shop counter is chosen without the information that decides it.
